Celtic has been drawn away to Rangers in Premier Sports Cup quarter finals, but ticket allocation is unclear…

Celtic face a trip to Ibrox after being drawn against the Rangers in the quarter final of the Premier sports cup, with the game to take scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 12th/13th of September.

Celtic of course faced the Ibrox club in last season’s Scottish Cup, also at the quarter final stage, with the Hoops winning on penalty kicks after a drab 0-0 draw in front of a huge away support in the free Broomloan.

Due to Scottish Cup ticketing allocations, the Celtic supporters enjoyed their biggest share of briefs in Govan since the original Beautiful Sunday in March 2018.

After Odsonne Edouard’s winner for ten man Celtic in a 3-2 victory fan pressure led to the latest Ibrox club slashing the away allocation for Glasgow Derby fixtures simply because their supporters were sick to the stomach at seeing the Celtic supporters celebrating on their own doorstep all too often.

However, we shouldn’t get our hopes up for a similar allocation due to SPFL cup rules, and not because of the unruly scenes we witnessed from the home supporters back in March.

That’s down to Scottish Cup rules that a allowed the visiting club to request up to 20 per cent of the available tickets.

That’s why Celtic received more than 8,000 seats for the Scottish Cup game.

The Premier Sports Cup operates under different regulation there is no equivalent rule in the current League Cup regulations guaranteeing Celtic supporters 20 per cent of Ibrox.

In fact, there is no fixed percentage guaranteeing away supporters a particular allocation for a quarter-final. For league derbies, Celtic and the Ibrox club have operated on an arrangement of around five per cent.

At Ibrox, an allocation in that region would mean roughly 2,500 Celtic supporters rather than the 8,042 who attended in March.

However, the league agreement does not automatically govern League Cup matches either. Which means Celtic’s exact allocation remains to be determined.

It’s will be a tough but great fixture to look forward to for Celtic supporters, but how many briefs we will be allocated remains unclear, for now.

The away allocation for Celtic visits was discussed at that pretend AGM the Rangers Board held last week and they stated that the allocation that they are looking at for Glasgow Derby games is 2500, so unless there’s some attempt to lower this to gain an advantage that is most likely the number.

But it’s easy to believe that there will be an attempt to lower the Celtic allocation back to the 800 down in that dangerous corner and for Celtic’s part they may well refuse to accept these tickets.

Given there is no reciprocal fixture that Celtic can impose an eye for an eye response – until we are drawn at home against them in the League Cup which could be decades away.

Police Scotland and the Scottish FA will have their own thoughts and ultimately safety of supporters has to be paramount.
