Canada futures drop as Trump’s Bombardier ban threat reignites trade fears

Investing.com - Canadian stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Tuesday, pressured by renewed cross-border trade friction and broader weakness in commodity and financial sectors.

Futures tracking the fell 0.55% to 2,132.7, signaling a soft start for Toronto equities following a negative session on Friday.

Bombardier faces revenue threat

Canadian business jet maker , which also trades in the United States over-the-counter is under pressure after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to ban sales of its aircraft in the American market unless the company shifts manufacturing onto U.S. soil.

Trump claimed that over 50% of Bombardier’s revenue originates in the United States. With consensus analyst forecasts placing Bombardier’s full-year 2026 revenue at approximately US$10.2 billion, an enforced U.S. market ban could put roughly US$5 billion in annual top-line revenue at risk.

The ultimatum marks a fresh escalation in cross-border trade rhetoric. Trump has repeatedly deployed tariff threats and import restriction warnings against key trade partners - including Canada - as a negotiation tactic to force industrial relocations and extract trade concessions, aggravating bilateral economic tensions.

The weak momentum in futures follows Friday’s sell-off on the Toronto Stock Exchange, where the benchmark S&P/TSX Composite index closed down 0.33%.
