Joey Porter Jr. has reached the part of his contract standoff where the business side is getting harder to ignore. The Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback is back on the practice field, however, his Week 1 status remains uncertain if the Steelers don’t get a deal done. That puts even more attention on a negotiation that has already dragged into September.
And Porter is not navigating it alone. His teammates have backed him throughout the process, with Jalen Ramsey publicly pushing the Steelers to pay him. Now Cameron Heyward has offered Porter something a little different: a veteran’s warning about how personal these negotiations can become.

Heyward spoke about Porter’s situation on September 2, and kept his message pretty simple: separate the contract from the locker room, even if that separation is easier said than done.
“Don’t take it personal, but you will. It’s a business at the end of the day. You know, there’s nobody in that locker room that doesn’t want Joey on that field. And that will never change.”

That advice carries some weight because Heyward has lived through his own contract battles in Pittsburgh. Porter is entering the final year of his rookie deal and has made it clear that he believes his play deserves to be rewarded. The CB has not allowed a touchdown as the primary defender since his rookie season, and the league’s cornerback market has exploded past $30 million per year.
Porter’s situation became more complicated on Wednesday after ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the lack of a formal offer had left the cornerback considering a trade request or an extended holdout. Fowler also reported that the Steelers are still likely to work toward a deal, with the coaching staff firmly behind Porter as a high-level cover man.
The timing is becoming critical. The Steelers have a longstanding policy of not negotiating contracts once the regular season starts, meaning their opener against the Atlanta Falcons effectively serves as a deadline. That support has been consistent inside the Steelers’ locker room. Linebacker Elandon Roberts recently called Porter “not even a distraction,” while Ramsey has openly argued that the team needs to compensate for its young corner.
Porter also acknowledged that the process has been difficult. Pittsburgh has already extended members of his 2023 draft class, including Nick Herbig and Darnell Washington, while Porter continues to wait.
The cornerback returned to practice Tuesday after missing most of camp with a back issue. His health appears to be trending in the right direction. Now the bigger question is whether the Steelers can get the business side right before Week 1 arrives.
