Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers delivered the superstar showdown everyone wanted Friday night.

The two guards traded difficult shots, momentum-changing baskets and impressive passes throughout the Indiana Fever’s 98-87 victory over the Dallas Wings at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. They finished with 29 points apiece, turning the latest chapter of their rivalry into one of the season’s most entertaining individual matchups.

Indiana coach Stephanie White enjoyed the show, but she also noticed the detail that ultimately helped Clark and the Fever leave with the victory.

Two superstars put on a show

Clark and Bueckers have been compared since their college careers, and their latest meeting offered another reminder of why both players have become foundational pieces for their franchises. Neither guard needed much room to create offense. Clark connected on deep jumpers and generated opportunities off the dribble, while Bueckers repeatedly found openings against Indiana’s defense.

“I’m sure when you watch it back, there are some areas that we can tighten up,” White said after the game. “But when you’ve got two great players that create shots for themselves really easily, there are flows of the game that I think you’re going to see that.”

The back-and-forth briefly made the game feel like a personal scoring contest. White admitted it was entertaining, although her focus quickly shifted toward how each star affected the other four players on the floor.

“It was fun to watch for a little while,” White said. “Then I think the biggest thing is how you get everybody else involved outside of those moments.”

Clark turned a duel into a Fever victory

That was where Clark created separation. Along with her 29 points, the Fever guard recorded 10 assists. Bueckers finished with six assists. Those four additional assists represented at least eight more points directly created for teammates, an important difference in an 11-point Indiana win.

Clark’s passing forced Dallas to defend the entire floor. When the Wings sent extra attention toward her, she found the open teammate instead of allowing the matchup with Bueckers to become an isolation contest. That balance is what makes Clark especially difficult to contain. She can take over as a scorer without disconnecting the rest of Indiana’s offense.

White’s comments were less about choosing between the two stars and more about identifying the next layer of elite guard play. Spectacular scoring can control stretches of a game. Creating quality possessions for an entire lineup can decide it.

“I just thought it was two great players making great plays,” White said.

Both players lived up to that description Friday. Clark simply paired her shot-making with enough playmaking to give Indiana the final word.

The Fever will attempt to carry that momentum into Sunday’s matchup against Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream.
