The Buffalo Bills will be without the services of defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis to begin the 2026 NFL season. News trickled down on Friday, August 14 that Mathis has been handed a three-game suspension.

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter was first to report the news on Mathis, noting that the suspension is due to his violation of the league’s banned substances protocol. That now leaves the Bills without a bona fide one-tech in-house and available to start the regular season. Buffalo’s first three games of the regular season are against the Houston Texans (Week 1, away), plus two consecutive home games against the Detroit Lions (Thursday Night Football, Week 2) and Los Angeles Chargers (Week 3).

With Mathis fighting for a key role along Buffalo’s interior defensive line, it remains to be seen how they handle replacing his snaps. Much had been made of the Bills neglecting to add a one-tech defensive tackle prospect via the 2026 NFL Draft. However, since that point a fair bit of discussion has revolved around whether or not there’s a true need for such a player to be featured in new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard’s system. Of course no one knows the answer to that query yet, and it’s possible that Leonhard himself utilizes some form of a hybrid approach between his college and NFL coaching experiences.

There is one intriguing name to consider, which would require president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane picking up the phone and successfully pulling off a major trade. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have already proclaimed zero intent or interest in trading disgruntled defensive tackle Vita. Schefter doesn’t agree that any trade involving Vea is dead in the water just yet, having recently said that he could see a move happening before the regular season begins.

Organizationally, the Bills had to navigate similar situations last year at this time with a pair of defenders being suspended to begin the 2025 NFL season. Defensive end Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi were both suspended for the first six games last season.
