The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets didn't need long to remind everyone that joint practices aren't exactly friendly. Tuesday's session quickly turned heated, with multiple scuffles breaking out between the two teams. In the middle of much of the chaos was Buccaneers right tackle Luke Goedeke, who appeared more than willing to set the physical tone for Tampa Bay. Goedeke was involved in multiple altercations throughout the practice, including an early confrontation with Jets rookie David Bailey during one-on-one pass-rushing drills. According to Goedeke, Bailey challenged him to the matchup, and after the rep ended, the two players got into it. Later in the practice, Goedeke became involved in another skirmish following an interception. During the altercation, he ripped a helmet off a Jets player and threw it across the field, becoming one of the most visible figures in what turned into an increasingly chaotic practice. While nobody wants the Buccaneers losing control during practice, there is something to be said for the nastiness Goedeke brings to the offensive line. Offensive linemen are expected to play with an edge. They have to establish a physical presence from the opening snap, protect their quarterback, and refuse to back down when defensive players try to impose themselves. Goedeke has never been shy about bringing that mentality to the field, and Tuesday was another example. The Buccaneers are also entering the season with an offensive line expected to be one of the team's biggest strengths. Goedeke is an important part of that group, and his physical mentality can help establish the identity Tampa Bay wants up front. Of course, there is a fine line between playing with an edge and allowing emotions to become a distraction. With multiple fights breaking out during the session, Tampa Bay will need to ensure its players maintain that intensity without letting it cross the line into something that hurts the team. Still, if the goal was to establish a little “nastiness” against the Jets, Goedeke certainly did his part.
