Wisdom comes with age, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has shown a vast improvement in his leadership over the years.
Mayfield has always been a fiery competitor, sometimes to a fault. He had a bitter falling out with the Cleveland Browns and was tagged as immature and petulant. But since joining the Buccaneers in 2023, he has learned to properly channel his fighting spirit and become more even-keeled.
On “The Rich Eisen Show,” the 31-year-old signal-caller acknowledged his past transgressions and how they became a part of his personal growth.

“I still wear my heart on my sleeve, but there’s definitely a lot more thinking before speaking or taking some actions,” said Mayfield.
“A lot of dumb mistakes in the past, stuff that I learn from and grow from. There are things that I wish I could change, but I can’t, so all I can do is learn and grow from those things, spread that knowledge, and try to help the guys who come into the building and just be the same leader and continue to embrace that role.”

He has been the emotional engine for the Buccaneers, and they are looking to bounce back after failing to qualify for the playoffs last season with an 8-9 record.
Mayfield, who is due for a contract extension, saw his numbers dip a bit from his inspired run in 2024 and took accountability for it—a true mark of leadership.
The Buccaneers will go as far as the two-time Pro Bowler will take them, and his recharged mentality will continue to be his anchor.
Tampa Bay will face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1.
