Watson has done next to nothing in the past four years that would warrant another contract with Cleveland or another contract, period, with anyone in the NFL. His career is very much on the line, and he knows it.

On Wednesday, Watson spoke about his expectations heading into the season and how he is viewing the year. He said, "Me being on the last year of my deal and being year 10, I feel like this is my opportunity to be able to go and showcase that I can still play in this league, and I want to continue to play in this league. So this is my opportunity to do that. "

That is one element of the entire Deshaun Watson discussion that gets lost in the shuffle. He is not a young player in this league anymore. He is turning 31 in just a couple of days and is simply a shadow of his former self.

What made Watson so good in his time in Houston was his ability to create plays with his athleticism. That goes away with age, but it also goes away with Watson's lengthy injury history.

It is very unlikely that even if things go decently this year, That is, of course, unless he leads the Browns to a playoff berth.

For Cleveland, they are just Whether it is Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, or Taylen Green, they just need decent quarterback play.

For Watson specifically, he desperately needs good quarterback play. If he plays well, he will have an opportunity at a very small contract somewhere next year. If he struggles, it might be time for the former promising star quarterback to consider life after football.
