After a lengthy offseason quarterback competition, Deshaun Watson has emerged ahead of Shedeur Sanders and will begin the season as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback. However, some are already calling on the Browns to move on from Sanders and consider adding another quarterback.
Browns urged to cut Shedeur Sanders and sign Vikings QB Max Brosmer
The Minnesota Vikings decided to release Max Brosmer, who started two games and appeared in seven during the 2025 season. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent last year after spending five seasons in college football.
As a rookie, Brosmer saw action in seven games, including two starts. He completed 66.2% of his passes for 328 yards but failed to throw a touchdown and was intercepted four times.
If Brosmer clears waivers, the Vikings could potentially bring him back by signing him to their practice squad. However, former Independence Community College head coach Jason Brown believes the Browns should make a move for Brosmer and move on from Sanders.
“Cut sanders sign him immediately @Browns,” Brown wrote.
For the time being, Cleveland seems committed to Sanders as the backup quarterback behind Deshaun Watson. Watson won the team’s quarterback competition with Sanders, as the battle that began during the offseason workout program and continued through the first two preseason games.
Sanders did get an extended opportunity last season, ultimately starting the Browns’ final eight games. However, according to NFL sources cited by CBS Sports, there are still several weaknesses in his game.
Those concerns go beyond his less-than-elite arm strength and include a tendency to hold onto the football too long and occasional struggles to process the field quickly. Those things have fueled speculation that the Browns could eventually decide to move on from Sanders.
Brosmer is not the only quarterback being mentioned as a possible replacement, as Joe Milton III has also emerged as another potential option for Cleveland.
Jared Mueller of SB Nation’s Dawgs By Nature recently examined the possibility of the Browns claiming Milton off waivers after the Dallas Cowboys released him on Monday.
“Just like Cleveland, the Dallas Cowboys continued their roster juggling on Monday, waiving QB Joe Milton, who many believed would be the team’s primary backup to QB Dak Prescott,” Mueller wrote. “Given Milton’s athletic ability and big arm, he fits HC Todd Monken’s traits for a quarterback.
“While Cleveland could choose to claim Milton and waive a player at another position, that seems unlikely. Instead, the addition of Milton would likely lead to the departure of either Shedeur Sanders or the rookie [Taylen] Green. With Milton’s experience and Green entering his first season, Sanders seems like the odd man out if the Browns were to claim Milton.”
Milton spent the 2025 season as Dak Prescott’s backup in Dallas and made a strong impression during the preseason. That performance makes him an intriguing option for the Browns if they decide to make another change at quarterback.
