Boston Hunters vs New York Heights — WPBL Discussion thread

Both the Boston Hunters and the New York Heights lost during Saturday’s doubleheader keeping them in a tie for the worst record in the league (2-4).

The Heights fell to the San Francisco Firebells 11-6. The MVP candidates from both teams, Danae Benites of the Heights and Kelsie Whitmore of the Firebells, essentially cancelled out each others contributions as each went two for three and each hit their sixth home runs of the season.

The Heights pitching was not able to contain the Firebells deep lineup and scored in every inning other than the first and sixth. Heights starter Jaida Lee was chased after only three and a third innings after having allowed six funs on eight hits and relievers Claire O’Sullivan and Keira Izumi did not fare much better as they allowed three and two runs respectively.

While the Heights simply lost on Saturday, the Hunters were demolished by the L.A. Queens 13-3.

The first half of the game was quite tight, highlighted by multiple strong defensive performances from the Hunters that allowed them to keep it tied at three through the fourth innings. Once Hunters starting pitcher Paloma Benach was pulled, however, everything unraveled and they went on to allow an additional ten runs in the final three innings.

The Hunters lineup was able to eek out three runs on four hits and two walks against the Queens starter Michelle Roche — highlighted by left fielder Ticara Geldenhuis’ first home run — but went completely silent after the bullpen took over. As the Queens were busy mashing their way through the top half of the final three innings, the Hunters were failing to reach base at all in the bottom half.

Both teams will look to todays game as an opportunity to bounce back after their losses against the west coast teams. With the leagues worst record at stake the Hunters and the Heights will face off tonight for the fourth time this season.
