Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton made a big change to his staff this offseason. First, Payton fired former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Then, he promoted former quarterbacks coach Davis Webb to Lombardi's old role. Payton handled play-calling duties through his first three seasons in Denver, but he also gave that role to Webb this offseason. Payton clearly has a lot of confidence in Webb, and the Broncos probably couldn't have kept the rising young coach without a promotion this offseason. Now entering his third season in the NFL, quarterback Bo Nix is excited to have his former position coach now calling plays. “I’m really excited," Nix said earlier this week. "I know he’s going to do a great job. He does a really good job preparing. He’s going to work harder than anybody else in the building at his craft, and he’s going to do his job to the best of his ability. I think that’s comforting when I go out there and play and hear that voice inside my helmet. Also, I think it will be fun to grow and to learn as he goes. "It’s definitely not going to be easy for him to do it for the first time, but that’s why he has the 11 [players] on the field, and Coach [Payton] to help support him. He’s going to do a great job. We’re going to go with the ebbs and flows of the season. We’re going to learn from the bad and continue to grow from the good. I’m excited to have him in my ear.” Webb will call plays in the team's three preseason games this month, then the real test will arrive when the regular season begins in September. After drawing head coach interest from other clubs this offseason, Webb will look to prove in 2026 that his fast rise up the coaching ranks has been warranted.
