The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can return from the concussion protocol not just healthy, but with a chance to regain the superstar form that earned him a massive extension before the season began.

Guerrero was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Saturday after a concerning incident on the diamond against the New York Yankees.

“Following a collision at third base Friday and subsequent concussion protocol testing, the Toronto Blue Jays have placed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the 7-day concussion IL,” Johnny Flores Jr. and Mitch Bannon reported for The Athletic. “Guerrero must progress through MLB’s return-to-play protocols before rejoining Toronto, leaving an opening at first base for the Jays.”

The timing is frustrating for Toronto, which needs its franchise cornerstone healthy and productive as it continues its push toward October. But the bigger concern is what Guerrero's absence means for an offense that has not received the superstar production it expected from him this season.

That reality became even harder to ignore Monday.

Toronto Blue Jays Hit Harsh Vladimir Guerrero Jr Milestone During Injury Stint

Guerrero's injury came as he reached a milestone that no Blue Jays fan would have expected when the season began.

“Today is the one-year anniversary of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s last regular season home run at Rogers Centre,” MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reported on Monday, along with a video of Guerrero’s sixth-inning longball against the Texas Rangers last year. “He's made 333 plate appearances at home since this swing.”

That drought alone would be remarkable for any established slugger. But it is even more striking for Guerrero, who has long been viewed as one of the game's most dangerous and consistent power hitters and has spent his entire career playing his home games in Toronto.

For a player whose career has included multiple seasons with 30-plus home runs, going an entire year between regular-season homers at Rogers Centre is a startling development.

Toronto Blue Jays Suffer Setback With Vladimir Guerrero Jr Injury

Despite selling off some veteran pieces at the trade deadline, the Blue Jays have hung onto playoff hopes. And Guerrero’s ongoing struggles this season raised the possibility that the team can make up some ground in the wild card race even without him.

“Replacing his offensive production, though, may not be as difficult as it would’ve been in other years,” Flores and Bannon added. “Guerrero is in the midst of his worst professional season, hitting just seven homers in 115 games with a .693 OPS. He’s gone over a year without hitting a regular season home run at Rogers Centre.”

But while the Blue Jays can likely survive a short absence from their franchise slugger, the team will surely need him to return healthy and effective if it hopes of making another run at the World Series.

The concussion takes priority, and Guerrero should not be rushed back before he is fully cleared. But once he returns, Toronto will need more from him than it has received for much of 2026.

The Rogers Centre drought is now impossible to overlook. A healthy Guerrero still has time to change that narrative, but the Blue Jays are running out of reasons to expect the old version of their superstar to simply reappear.
