Bills new stadium facing early criticisms on grass conditions: 'The field is a—' originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Bills have a new stadium — and a new playing surface — for the 2026 season. It remains to be seen whether the colossus will prove a venue befitting of its hulking price tag. Buffalo's home ground sparkles in the sunlight. But the utility of its new pasture, which at times looked wretched and weary during the Bills' preseason opener against the Panthers, has left something to be desired thus far. Here's the latest on the Bills' field issues. MORE: NFL preseason power rankings after first week  Bills new stadium field issues Buffalo implemented a new playing surface ahead of the 2026 season, spurning its traditional artificial turf for natural Kentucky bluegrass. That process has brought about some early complications. In Saturday's preseason opener, clumps of grass leapt into the air following a collision between Bills quarterback Kyle Allen and Carolina cornerback Chau Smith-Wade. “The field is a— right now,” an anonymous player told The Athletic. “But it’s early.” That wasn't quite a unanimous opinion. Some who took to the field on Saturday praised the carpet, saying it proved far more comfortable than its polyethylene predecessor. “The grass looked good,” Bills linebacker Dorian Williams said. “It was cool. A couple spots kind of chunked up a little bit, but it’s better than playing on turf. “The kinks will keep getting worked out. You can see some of the grass kind of mound up and guys knocking it back down, but I’ve had no traction problems so far.” MORE:Complete stats behind Ty Simpson's stellar preseason debut What kind of surface is Bills' new stadium? Buffalo unveiled its latest colosseum ahead of the 2026 campaign. The venue cost $2.2 billion to construct. It has proven somewhat contentious thus far; some fans expressed outrage over the prevalence of obstructed views.

"Saturday's practice was a great opportunity to test the new stadium. We are currently addressing internal and external feedback regarding the facility's operation following the first event," the statement read, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "We'll utilize the next six weeks to refine any details as we prepare for the home opener on Thursday, Sept. 17." Per CNY Central, more than a third of that total — $850 million — was shelled out by taxpayers. Erie County taxpayers made up $250 million of that tally, while the remainder of the state accounted for the rest. Buffalo fans reportedly threw down $263 million via personal seat licenses.
