Bill Self Explains Why He Chose to Return to Kansas After Considering Retirement Kansas head coach Bill Self briefly considered stepping away from coaching following the Jayhawks' heartbreaking 67-65 loss to St. John's in the second round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but the Hall of Famer says concerns about his health, not coaching fatigue, were behind those thoughts. Speaking recently on Jon Rothstein's Inside College Basketball Now, Self admitted his postgame comments fueled unnecessary speculation about his future and acknowledged he could have handled the situation differently. "First of all, I made a mistake in the presser afterwards," Self said. "I should have said, 'Oh, God, there's no decision to be made.' And then therefore it wouldn't have ever been a big deal. So I made a mistake there." Instead, Self left the door open about whether he would return, leading to nearly two weeks of uncertainty surrounding the future of Kansas basketball. The 63-year-old coach explained that his hesitation stemmed from health concerns that had lingered throughout the season. "But at that moment, I probably thought that was it," Self said. "In large part because of health issues." Self underwent a heart procedure involving stent insertion before the 2025-26 season and experienced another health scare during the year that caused him to miss Kansas' road game at Colorado. He received IV treatment and returned to coach the Jayhawks in their next contest, an 86-62 victory over Kansas State, ultimately finishing the season on the sideline. Although those incidents created uncertainty, Self said conversations with multiple medical specialists changed his outlook. "And I had been told some things and I'd had some issues during the season that weren't documented," Self said. "But, talking to multiple doctors, an expert out of Dallas, doing different things... And I started feeling better immediately. I jumped the gun a little bit because I was probably nervous about it." Those medical evaluations ultimately convinced Self there was no reason to walk away from coaching. "But the reality is, I feel good," Self said. "My doctor said, 'Bill, the reason you're doing this shouldn't be because of health, because your health is fine.' I needed to hear that at the end of the season." Self's decision to return came during one of the most eventful offseasons of his Kansas tenure. The Jayhawks lost nearly their entire roster to graduation and the transfer portal, including standout center Flory Bidunga, while rebuilding around five-star freshman Tyran Stokes and several transfer additions. Kansas also continues monitoring potential late roster additions as Self looks to finalize the 2026-27 squad before the season begins. Despite four consecutive NCAA Tournament exits before the Sweet 16, Self made it clear that he remains motivated to continue coaching. Rather than feeling obligated to stay, he believes his health has improved and that he still has the energy to guide Kansas through the challenges of college basketball's modern era. Now entering his 24th season in Lawrence, Self will attempt to lead the Jayhawks back into national championship contention with a completely retooled roster and renewed confidence in both his health and his future on the Kansas sideline.
