Bayern Munich Frauen started off their season by adding another trophy to their already bulging cabinet.

The Frauen dispatched VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 in the DFB-Supercup, winning the title for the third year in a row.

It was Wolfsburg who made the brighter start, probably naturally, considering Bayern were starting without a number of their usual starters. However, Bayern soon gained control of the game, and took the lead around the half hour mark, albeit in a rather curious manner.

During a set piece, Jovana Damnjanović delivered a rather tame looking header to Wolves goalkeeper Stine Johannes, who caught it. But Johannes collided with the goal post, lost balance, and inadvertently carried the ball over the goal line.

Johannes’ blues would get even worse in stoppage time. Klara Bühl’s free kick from distance looped into the box, and should have been gathered easily by the keeper. However, Johannes let it slip between herself and the far post to give Bayern a two-goal advantage at the break.

Less than a minute passed after the restart when Bühl added another after some nifty footwork and a powerful left-footed drive that left Johannes with no chance. It was the first goal of the afternoon that did not involve an error.

Bayern’s attack died down a bit after that, possibly due to the comfortable lead and the scorching temperatures of the day. But goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic was on hand to make some fine saves and keep Wolfsburg at bay. There was a slight sour note when Mahmutovic accidentally punched captain Glódis Perla Viggósdóttir in the head while going for the ball, which led to an early precautionary substitution.

There was still time for new signings Sophie Proost and Kassandra Potsi to make their official debuts for Bayern, and they celebrated their first title with the team as well. Before lifting the trophy, Viggósdóttir made a touching gesture by urging the absentees of the game onto the podium to celebrate together.

Bayern thus became the record winners of the Frauen Supercup with three titles, overtaking FSV Frankfurt. The Frauen will start their Bundesliga campaign this coming Friday with a trip to Union Berlin. The DFB-Pokal and Champions League schedule will begin next month.
