Brian Farinas’ future took an unexpected turn this summer. The La Masia midfielder was close to leaving FC Barcelona and joining Girona, but Hansi Flick stopped the move after Frenkie de Jong’s injury became known.
The 20-year-old starlet’s performances during pre-season then convinced both the sporting department and first-team coaching staff that he should remain at the club and be given a first-team squad number.
Farinas was subsequently handed the historic No. 4 shirt, and shortly after the summer transfer window closed, Deco contacted his agent to begin discussions over a new contract.
His current deal runs until 30 June 2028, but Barcelona have significant faith in his potential despite the fact that he has yet to make his senior debut.

The meeting was described as highly positive, with substantial progress made towards extending the midfielder’s contract.
There are not expected to be any problems in reaching an agreement that would keep the young midfielder at Barcelona beyond 2030.
As part of the new deal, his salary will be increased to reflect his new status as a first-team player.

The midfielder has also undergone another change in recent days as he settles into life as a fully fledged first-team player.
Farinas had previously been arriving at the Ciutat Esportiva in a 2007 Toyota Auris, a car that was almost two decades old and had become something of a talking point around the training ground.
The club’s first-team hierarchy decided to change that situation last week, when the 20-year-old midfielder was given an electric CUPRA Raval as a member of the senior squad.
But the upgrade did not stop there. On Thursday, he was handed a CUPRA Formentor VZ5, the same model supplied to all first-team players under the club’s agreement.
Until recently, that particular car had been used by Marc Casado, before the midfielder left on loan for Deportivo La Coruna.
Farinas is still waiting for his first competitive appearance for Barcelona, but his rapid promotion has already brought a new squad number, a new set of wheels, and a new contract is next.
