Barcelona Chose Anthony Gordon Over Marcus Rashford for One Simple Reason
Marcus Rashford looked set for a permanent move to Barcelona. The outline was there, the numbers were manageable and his loan spell had gone well. Then Barcelona walked away and spent £69m on Anthony Gordon instead. That tells you everything about what they think they need.
Rashford, now 28, had done his part. After leaving Manchester United on loan following his breakdown in relationship with Ruben Amorim, he delivered 14 goals and 14 assists in Catalonia. That is solid production by any measure. He also forced his way back into Thomas Tuchel’s England plans for the World Cup and capped his season by scoring in the win over Real Madrid that sealed La Liga.
Ordinarily, that would be enough to trigger a £26m purchase option. Barcelona decided otherwise.
Deco Explains Barcelona Transfer Call
The explanation from sporting director Deco was direct and, frankly, sensible. Barcelona were grateful for Rashford’s contribution, but they wanted a different profile. In his words for RAC1, “We are extremely grateful to Rashford. He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony.

“His style fits with what the coach is looking for. We see every training session and analyse the team. We have a clear idea of what we’re looking for. One of the areas we struggled last season, without Raphinha, was that the team’s energy dropped. It was lost.
“We needed more intensity. We analysed a lot of wingers. Signing someone from the Premier League is almost impossible, but [Flick] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there.”
This is really about function over reputation. Rashford can score, create and carry the ball. Gordon gives you relentless running, pressure, repeat sprints and intensity off the ball. Hansi Flick clearly valued that more. Barcelona were not shopping for the better name, they were shopping for the better tactical fit.

For Rashford, the failed Barcelona transfer has not turned into exile. He returned to Carrington late in the summer and has already featured in Manchester United’s first three matches of the season. He started against Ipswich Town and Everton and remains firmly in Michael Carrick’s plans ahead of meetings with Sabah FK and Manchester City.
That matters. Players who come back from near exits often drift. Rashford has not. United have used him, and Carrick has made it clear that the forward remains an important part of the squad. The manager said in August: “He’s added to the group for us, for sure, because it’s pretty obvious. I think he’s making the most of that for us and for him as well, to have the opportunity to be here.
“He’s one of our own. He’s living his dream, playing here now, and trying to be successful and win.
“At this club, there is always players that have come back sometimes, or players that maybe were going to leave, didn’t leave. It’s always about what you do next, and what your intentions are. He’s been fantastic since he came back, I have to say.”
Anthony Gordon Move Shows Flick Priorities
Barcelona’s choice was not a verdict that Rashford failed. It was a decision about what Flick wants his front line to look like. Gordon offers edge, pace and constant aggression in transitions. Rashford offered output, but not quite the same physical tempo. At elite level, those details decide transfers.
Rashford still has a chance to shape his season at Old Trafford. Barcelona have moved on. Manchester United, for now, have not.
