Jesse Palmer criticized Jayden Daniels over his dispute with LSU regarding the No. 5 jersey and the quarterback’s NIL concerns. Daniels’ camp sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter after the school gave his former number to freshman quarterback DJ Pickett. The dispute has also raised questions about LSU’s use of Daniels’ name and image. Speaking on TSN OverDrive, Palmer called Daniels’ response unnecessary while acknowledging his accomplishments at LSU. “I sort of see this as Jaden Daniels, I think, showing a little bit of immaturity, I think showing a little bit of selfishness as well,” Palmer said. “To me, a number is a number and in college football, someone’s going to have it before you and someone’s going to have it after you.” MORE: Jayden Daniels’ LSU jersey demand is very lame Palmer argued that jersey numbers routinely change hands in college football. He used his own experience at Florida as an example. “I didn’t win a Heisman Trophy, so I didn’t have my number retired,” Palmer said. “But when I went to Florida, I came right after Danny Wuerffel.” Palmer wore Wuerffel’s No. 7 after the former quarterback won the Heisman Trophy. He said neither Wuerffel nor coach Steve Spurrier objected. “I remember asking Coach Spurrier on my official visit, could I wear the number seven,” Palmer said. “He said, ‘Absolutely, it’s just a number.’” The situation is different because Daniels won the 2023 Heisman at LSU. However, Palmer thinks that his attention should now remain on Washington. Washington finished 5-12 after reaching the NFC Championship Game during Daniels’ rookie season. Palmer said that context makes the LSU dispute poorly timed. “You were the rookie of the year, and you were phenomenal two years ago,” Palmer said. “But shouldn’t you just sort of be more focused on the Commanders?” Washington also enters 2026 with changes on the offensive side of the ball. Daniels needs consistency and health while the Commanders work to restore their offensive identity. Palmer questioned the amount of energy Daniels is spending on the LSU controversy. He said, “I just think a lot of immaturity and sort of a lot of energy being spent in a place it doesn’t need to be.” MORE: Jayden Daniels wants LSU drama handled ‘privately’ Palmer also pointed to the broader NIL dispute, including Daniels’ demand involving his Heisman Trophy. “I just think there’s other things that Jayden Daniels needs to be worried about,” Palmer said. Palmer’s argument centers on priorities rather than whether Daniels has legitimate concerns. Washington needs its quarterback healthy and focused after a lost 2025 season. Daniels can protect his brand, but his performance in 2026 will ultimately shape how his NFL career develops. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
