Aston Villa have made a formal move for João Palhinha, with Bayern Munich rejecting the first proposal as the German club insist on a permanent transfer. Sport Witness, citing Sky Deutschland, reports that Villa have already agreed personal terms with the 31-year-old Portugal international and submitted a loan offer containing an option to buy.

Aston Villa face a choice over the deal

That proposal has hit an obstacle. Bayern want a sale, while Villa initially sought a temporary arrangement that would leave them room to decide later. Palhinha returned to Munich after spending 2025/26 at Tottenham, where he made 33 Premier League appearances and scored five goals.

Bayern’s own records confirm that his Spurs loan included a purchase option, while his contract in Munich runs to June 2028. Bayern have no appetite for another loan. The latest reports therefore point to a straightforward disagreement over the payment structure, rather than the player’s willingness to move to England now.

T4O take: Aston Villa need the right midfield solution

The football case for Palhinha is easy to make. With Amadou Onana ruled out for the majority of the season, Villa need a defensive midfielder rather than a short-term patch. Palhinha offers Premier League experience, physical presence and ball-winning instincts, giving Unai Emery an alternative for Onana’s defensive work.

Villa shouldn’t pretend Bayern will accept another option-to-buy arrangement. Spurs declined their purchase clause after the loan, so Bayern have little reason to repeat that structure. The club paid €51m for Palhinha in 2024, according to Transfermarkt, and Bayern still hold a contract running to 2028.

Aston Villa should make the permanent move

Villa should make a permanent bid in the €25m-€30m range, or offer a loan carrying a mandatory purchase clause. That price would give them an experienced Premier League midfielder without matching Bayern’s original €51m investment.

The 31-year-old’s profile matters more than resale value. He won 62% of his duels last season in the supplied data, while his 85% passing accuracy suggests he can retain possession without inviting pressure. Five goals and two assists in 33 league appearances add production.

There is a risk. A €25m-€30m commitment for a 31-year-old can look expensive if his physical level drops, and Villa must account for wages and squad planning. Yet Champions League demands change the calculation. Emery needs an anchor now.

Palhinha wants the move and personal terms are reportedly settled. That gives Aston Villa leverage on the player’s side, but Bayern control the structure. Villa should stop treating this as one-season insurance and make the permanent offer the situation demands.
