Arsenal opened their 2026-27 Under-18 Premier League South season with a goalless draw away to West Brom, collecting a clean sheet and an away point after a disciplined defensive display.

Jack Talbot ensured Arsenal’s under-18s began the new campaign with something to build on, producing a string of important saves as the young Gunners claimed a hard-earned point away from home.

The opening day draw at West Bromwich Albion also featured first competitive appearances for two of Arsenal’s latest academy prospects, offering an early glimpse of the next generation stepping into league football.

The first half was a tightly contested affair with few clear opportunities, although the hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock when Harry French struck the crossbar.

Arsenal’s best chance before the interval came through Maalik Hashi, whose direct free-kick found the side-netting.

The match became more open after the restart, but it was Talbot who emerged as the decisive figure.

The goalkeeper produced a succession of impressive second-half saves as West Brom increased the pressure, preserving Arsenal’s clean sheet with a standout individual performance.

Despite enjoying moments of their own after the break, Arsenal were unable to find the breakthrough, settling for a point to begin the league season.

There was also encouragement in the inclusion of Jaden Maghoma and Daniel McCarron, who both made their Arsenal Under-18 debuts after featuring in the club’s successful Shanghai Future Star Cup campaign earlier this month.

Reflecting on his display after the final whistle, Talbot said: “It was a tough game, we knew it was going to be scrappy coming up here to West Brom.

“I think in the first half, we had to kind of ride the storm a bit and keep them out and that’s what we did, and that gave us a platform to perform in the second half.

“Then obviously we had moments and I was making saves in the second half, so I enjoyed it.”

Arsenal’s young side will now turn their attention to their first home fixture of the new Under-18 Premier League campaign when Ipswich Town visit next Saturday.
