'Football 301': Is Bills-Texans the most intriguing game of Week 1?

The 2026 NFL season wastes no time serving up a blue-chip matchup as the Houston Texans host the Buffalo Bills in a Sunday AFC showdown. Both teams enter the campaign with lofty playoff ambitions and questions to answer, setting the stage for an early-season contest with the feel of a prime-time proving ground.

Here's how Yahoo Sports’ Matt Harmon and Nate Tice broke down the clash on “Football 301’s” Week 1 preview.

Can DJ Moore change everything for Josh Allen and the Bills?

For the past two seasons, the Texans’ defense has had Josh Allen's number, as Tice emphasized: in 2024 and 2025, Allen posted a paltry 31% success rate against Houston, combining for just 140 net passing yards and an astonishing eight sacks in last year's meeting.

Houston has leaned into aggressive man coverage, unafraid of a Bills receiving corps that lacked perimeter punch.

That's where Buffalo's offseason headliner comes in. The acquisition of Moore is the fulcrum of this year's offensive hopes, as Harmon explained: "Their plan has been we're going to add DJ Moore. We're going to fix the passing game. I talked myself into it the more I looked at his route tree and what I think is going to fit with this offense. "

Moore's ability to separate outside and punish man coverage will be put to the test immediately against corners who stifled Buffalo's boundaries last year.

Beyond Moore, the Bills will look for new wrinkles from play-caller Joe Brady. Will they lean on 11 personnel to spread out Houston, or go heavy with tight ends and attempt to run? Preseason evidence hinted at more condensed 11 looks, and both Harmon and Tice are eager to see the deployment of Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir. There's even buzz about James Cook's passing-game role emerging as a valuable man-coverage "breaker," given Houston's linebacker vulnerability.

Can WR Kayshon Boutte make immediate impact after trade?

While last year's calling card was suffocating defense, the Texans enter 2026 retooling their offense around a rebuilt line and new perimeter pieces. Look for highly touted Kayshon Boutte to make a debut impact as an outside receiver.

Jim Leonhard's arrival as Bills defensive coordinator is an X factor. The ex-Chargers mastermind prefers man coverage but may not yet have the horses to run his full playbook.

Both Harmon and Tice expect the Texans to lean into multiple-tight-end sets, featuring Dalton Schultz and Marlin Klein, to hunt matchup advantages and bolster the run game.

"I'd be shocked if we don't see one of, if not their highest, 12 personnel rates in years," Harmon noted. How Nico Collins and Boutte fare versus a Bills secondary in transition could swing the game.

Prediction: Defense rules early

Both analysts forecast a low-scoring, physical affair. Tice called it "a rock fight" between "War Daddy" Josh Allen and a Texans defense stacked with "War Daddies” up front. With both teams introducing wrinkle and repair, the side that integrates best — Buffalo's new firepower or Houston's evolving attack — will seize the upper hand.

Official pick? Both Harmon and Tice lean Houston at home in a "squeaker," something like 17-16.
