Newcastle’s summer has been dominated by outgoing headlines — Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, Sandro Tonali joining Tottenham, Anthony Gordon gone to Barcelona, and Eddie Howe exiting Tyneside.

Now, it’s worth pausing to think about whether the club’s reported move for Amar Dedic is really about ambition… or if it’s more about necessity. That distinction matters for how Newcastle fans should read this deal.

The Numbers on the Dedić Deal

Fabrizio Romano reported personal terms agreed on a five-year contract, with the fee landing around €30 million as a package deal with Benfica. That figure has been consistent across multiple outlets over the past days, even as the exact split between guaranteed money and add-ons has shifted slightly in reporting. Dedić is expected to fly to England for a medical shortly, with Newcastle hoping to have him registered in time for the Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 23.

Why Right-Back, and Why Now

This one isn’t hard to explain once you look at the depth chart. Tino Livramento is currently working back from injury, and Kieran Trippier left for Wolves this summer, leaving Jaissle without a natural senior option at right-back heading into a season that includes Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup football. Dedić primarily plays right-back but has the versatility to cover the left flank too, which gives Jaissle a squad piece rather than a single-position specialist.

The Salzburg Connection Is the Real Story

What separates this from a generic depth signing is the relationship between player and manager. Dedić played under Jaissle at Red Bull Salzburg before his move to Benfica last year, and that familiarity is being framed by multiple reports as a driving factor in his decision to prioritize Newcastle over staying in Lisbon. For a manager still just weeks into the job and trying to establish an identity after Howe’s departure, bringing in a player who already understands what Jaissle wants tactically is worth more than the transfer fee suggests on its own.

What Comes Next

Romano’s reporting didn’t stop at Dedić — the same post flagged a midfielder as the next item on Newcastle’s list, which tracks given the hole left by Tonali and Guimarães this summer. Dedić alone doesn’t finish the rebuild, but it does close one of the more obvious gaps in the squad before the Liverpool opener, and it does it with a player who won’t need months to understand what his manager is asking for. That’s not nothing, given how much else Jaissle has had to figure out from scratch since taking over.
