If the season ended today, the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles would all make the postseason.
No division has ever had four teams make the postseason in history, but there is a real chance it happens this year. The Orioles have clawed back into possession of a wild card spot, tied in record with the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers, but hold the tiebreakers.
Even if the Orioles drop out of the race, the Toronto Blue Jays have a chance to get in. They are only half a game back of the Orioles for a wild card spot. The Rays are likely going to win the division, and the Yankees and Red Sox will likely own the top two wild card spots in the American League. All three of those teams have a case to be the best team in the American League this year.
The Rays have the best record, but when Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger are back, the Yankees will be a force to be reckoned with, especially given how good their pitching is. The Red Sox have saved their season and played like one of the best teams in the league for about a month and a half. They are in a slump right now, but are about to get Roman Anthony and Trevor Story back.
The Orioles would need to go on a Cinderella run to actually make noise in October, but in Major League Baseball, anything can happen. It's not about the best team sometimes, just the hottest.
The Blue Jays made the World Series last year, and if they get into the dance, they can certainly make some noise. Jose Soriano and Dylan Cease are a great duo in the rotation, and if Trey Yesavage returns, they will suddenly be a team no team wants to face in a best-of-three or best-of-five series.
