
The programme uses Mako SmartRobotics from Stryker, along with three-dimensional CT imaging and detailed pre-operative planning, to help surgeons assess a patient’s anatomy and plan bone preparation and implant positioning before surgery.
During the procedure, a robotic arm assists the surgeon in executing the pre-operative plan. The system is designed to provide additional information and control during surgery, while treatment decisions and surgical judgement remain with the operating surgeon.
Arun Kannan, senior orthopaedic robotic surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, said the experience gained through the procedures had helped the team understand where robotic assistance could add value to joint replacement surgery. “The experience has helped us understand where robotic assistance can add real value and how best to use it for each patient,” he said.
Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Chennai Region, Apollo Hospitals, said the adoption of advanced technology was part of the hospital’s efforts to support clinicians in surgical care.
As part of the milestone, senior orthopaedic robotic surgeons, Arun Kannan, Kornad Kosygan, Kunal Patel, Navaladi Shankar, Vijay Kishore Reddy, and Madhan Thiruvengada delivered keynote addresses.
