A decision on who the captains will be at Manchester City has been made

Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland have loomed as the favourites to be the captains for Manchester City under Enzo Maresca. The pair were in City’s captaincy group for the 2025-26 season. Enzo Maresca has confirmed that the pair will be two of the four City captains for the upcoming season. There will be two more players added to Manchester City’s captaincy group come the end of the summer transfer window.

Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland will be two of the four Manchester City captains.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca was asked on Friday if he had chosen his captains for the 2026-27 season. Maresca revealed that he had, Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland will be in Manchester City’s captaincy group. However two more players would be added to the group once the transfer window closes. Speaking on who he had chosen to be in City’s captaincy group, in quotes relayed by Hayters TV, Maresca explained: “At the moment I have picked Ruben [Dias] and Erling [Haaland], and I want to wait until the end of the transfer window to pick two more.”

“Ruben showed during his time at this club how good he is as a player. In terms of being a leader, it is important for the captains to understand that the reason why they are captain is that I expect more from them, not because I give them more freedom or I give them more advantage.”

“It’s the opposite for me. The leadership group, the captains are the ones that have to show more and give more in every moment.”

Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland were the obvious choices for a leadership role in Enzo Maresca’s squad, who joins them remains to be seen.

There were two clear standouts to be included in Manchester City’s captaincy group by Enzo Maresca. Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland were those two players. Dias has been a leader ever since he arrived at the Etihad. The Portuguese international remains an inspirational figure to his teammates. Erling Haaland has grown into the role and is a pivotal figure for his club.

Who the other two players who will form Manchester City’s captaincy group remains to be seen. Rodri would be a shoe-in for such a role. However, it remains to be seen if he will be at City for next season. After Rodri, perhaps two of Phil Foden, Marc Guehi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Josko Gvardiol or perhaps left-field candidate will emerge. This answer will be confirmed when the summer transfer window closes.

Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias have been confirmed by Enzo Maresca to be two players that form Manchester City’s captaincy group. That revelation was expected. The next step is to find two other players, as Enzo Maresca explained yesterday.
