They last met on Labor Day in 2017 for a season-opening matchup that was the first college football game at Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Volunteers never led in regulation and overcame two 14-point deficits before securing the victory in double overtime.
The first matchup between the Volunteers and Yellow Jackets dates back to 1902 in a game that saw Tennessee secure a 10-6 victory.
They would face off seven more times through 1911, with Georgia Tech winning five of the first eight matchups. This period also saw the most lopsided win in series history when Georgia Tech head coach John Heisman led his team to a 45-0 home victory in 1905.Both schools became charter members of the Southeastern Conference in 1933. After a 35-year hiatus, the rivalry was renewed in 1946. Legendary Vols head coach Robert Neyland faced off with Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Dodd, who was a star quarterback for Neyland and the Volunteers from 1928 to 1930. Tennessee won by a 13-9 score.
The teams split the four matchups between 1946 and 1949. After a five-year pause, the series resumed in 1954 and remained a regular fixture in the schedule even after Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1964. Aside from three years in the 70s, the schools played each other annually through 1987.From 1954 to 1987, Tennessee won the matchup 19 times, including an eight-game streak of wins from 1967 to 1976. Six of Georgia Tech's 10 wins all-time over the Vols came between 1954 and 1963.
Overall, Tennessee leads the all-time series 25-17. There have been two ties in the history of the matchup in 1955 and 1985.
