The opened the 2026 season with a dominant defensive performance, and wasted little time reminding the NFL how much his presence changes everything for the unit.

on Thursday Night Football, with Warner making history while leading a defense that held its NFC West rival to seven points. The 29-year-old linebacker finished the season opener with 11 tackles, including five solo stops and six assisted tackles, while adding a forced fumble.

Warner’s performance also pushed him past Hall of Fame linebacker Patrick Willis as the franchise’s all-time tackles leader.

The four-time All-Pro entered Week 1 with 948 career tackles, just two behind Willis’ franchise record of 950. Warner recorded his third tackle by the second quarter, giving him 951 for his career and sole possession of first place in 49ers history.

His dominant return carried additional significance after an injury derailed his 2025 campaign.

Fred Warner makes immediate impact after injury-shortened 2025 season

after suffering a fractured and dislocated right ankle. He recorded 51 tackles, two tackles for loss, three passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery before the injury ended his regular season.

The shortened campaign marked a dramatic change for one of the NFL’s most consistent linebackers. Before 2025, Warner had never finished a full season with fewer than 118 tackles since San Francisco selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Warner’s Week 1 performance offered an immediate reminder of what the 49ers missed during his absence. Beyond his 11 tackles, his forced fumble increased his career total to 18 and helped San Francisco control the Rams throughout the season opener.

His ability to cover ground, create turnovers and anchor the middle of the defense makes him an X-factor capable of changing the ceiling of San Francisco’s unit. After losing most of last season to injury, Warner’s return already looks significant for a 49ers team with postseason aspirations.

San Francisco will now return home for its Week 2 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1:25 p.m. PT on FOX.
