The Mets’ defense was on full display in the series opener against the Padres at home on Monday night, as RF Carson Benge threw out two runners at the plate in scoring position in the first inning, followed by LF A.J. Ewing throwing out another in the next inning.

In both innings, the visitors had opportunities to score more than a run but were shut down in the first and managed only one in the second, halving the deficit. Subsequently, the New York bullpen, led by starter Nolan McLean, pitched brilliantly, securing a 2-1 win.

Fans were quick to share their reactions to the series opener’s viral defensive plays on social media, with many criticizing the Padres’ 3B coach for his lack of game-reading skills.

“3rd Base Coach just lost his job for sure,” one fan commented.

Benge received wide praise from the home crowd for his thrilling defensive plays, with many exclaiming that the 23-year-old should be receiving the Rookie of the Year award.

Benge finished the game 1-for-3, with RBI contributions from Bo Bichette and Luis Robert Jr. that helped the Mets take the lead over San Diego, which the bullpen then preserved until the end.

What Did Carson Benge Say About His Key Defensive Plays?

Benge addressed the media for a post-game interview, where he was naturally asked about the two throwouts at the plate in the first inning. Benge said it was always valuable to take runs off the board to make life easier for the pitcher.

He also credited his throwing arm to his previous experience as a pitcher.

“Being able to take runs off the board in any way possible is huge for the team and for the pitcher. So being able to keep runs at a minimum is huge. I think it comes from being a pitcher. I think that’s helped quite a bit. Just throwing it through the cutoff man’s head as hard as I can, and things usually work out,” Benge said.

The rookie is posting a solid stat line at the plate this season, with a .273 batting average, 14 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .750 OPS in 120 games. He is projected to hit 18 home runs and drive in 64 RBIs this year.

The Mets continue their interdivisional series against the Padres tomorrow, with first pitch in game 2 scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
