IDW’s Star Trek 60th Anniversary Special features one-off stories celebrating the depth and scope of the franchise, and in “The Sesquipedalian Gambit,” The Animated Series gets its due. Written by Ryan North and drawn in the style of Star Trek: The Animated Series by Derek Charm, the story explodes what fans think they know about the Pakleds by revealing the Federation actually met them nearly a century before Picard and company did.

Ryan North and Derek Charm are no strangers to the Star Trek franchise, having created Lower Decks comics for IDW.

In this light-hearted story, Kirk and his Enterprise stumble across a group of Pakleds, whose ship is cobbled together from other vessels. The Pakleds want to add the Enterprise to their collection, and try their best to get one over on the crew. However, the Pakleds are simply too slow for the crew of the Enterprise, who use trickery to convince the aliens they are outnumbered.
