If not, some difficult decisions will have to be made about depth chart standings and roster spots. Who will be the Colts' backup quarterback? Both Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard have flashed, but they've each been quite inconsistent as well. What has stood out is Richardson's ability to extend plays in preseason games, turning sacks into positive gains, while adding a new element to the Colts' offense for defenses to contend with. This can perhaps be a differentiator for him. Shane Steichen said last week that he does not have a timetable for making this decision. Who will be the Colts kicker? In practice, Blake Grupe has been the better kicker -- and it hasn't been particularly close. But in the preseason games, Shrader is yet to miss, while Grupe is yet to make an attempt. Special teams coordinator Brian Mason said that preseason kicks will "carry the most weight" in the decision-making process. Who starts at linebacker? What we can likely say is that Akeem Davis-Gaither will be one of the starters. He is yet to play in a preseason game. But who will be starting next to him is still to be determined. Now, I will say that it looks like this decision will come down to Jaylon Carlies and CJ Allen, with Carlies potentially having the advantage.
