2. Bundesliga: Magdeburg bounce back with dominant win over Osnabrück

A first-half brace from Alexander Nollenberger had Magdeburg comfortably in front at the break, before Emmanuel Iyoha struck in the second half to wrap up the victory for Petrik Sander’s side and deliver the perfect response to last week’s heavy defeat.

Magdeburg were in complete control from minute one as Osnabrück struggled to gain any sort of foothold in the game, with wave after wave of Magdeburg attacks coming at the home goal with no sign of relief.

The first big chance fell to Mateusz Żukowski after Nollenberger’s header was tipped into the striker’s path. However, Żukowski could only somehow divert his effort onto the post with the goal gaping, much to his disbelief and that of everyone inside the stadium.

Magdeburg were finally rewarded for their sustained pressure after 24 minutes when Nollenberger opened the scoring. A quickly taken throw-in found the full-back on the left, and he let fly from the edge of the box, with his stunning strike evading the goalkeeper before nestling in the top corner to make it 1-0.

Nollenberger completed his brace just 10 minutes later with another fantastic finish. Baris Atik played a lovely ball over the Osnabrück defence for the full-back to run onto, and he took the ball straight out of the air before driving his effort into the far corner to double Magdeburg’s lead.

The visitors therefore took a commanding 2-0 advantage into the break.

Magdeburg resumed normal service after the restart and even had a third goal ruled out when Żukowski raced through on goal and calmly finished. However, the forward was deemed to have been offside when the ball was played through to him.

Just as it seemed Osnabrück were beginning to come back into the game, Magdeburg delivered the killer blow with 20 minutes remaining. Luka Hyryläinen found Iyoha with a clever ball, allowing the winger to leave his defender in the dust with a sharp turn before curling his effort into the far corner to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond doubt.

The visitors comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to claim an emphatic first victory of the season, much to the delight of the travelling fans and Petrik Sander.
